BioBLAST -- NASA Classroom of the Future
BioBLAST is a multimedia high school biology curriculum supplement developed by the NASA Classroom of the Future staff working with NASA scientists and data. In this adventure lunar base scenario, students try to balance the life support requirements of food, water, oxygen, and carbon dioxide. They learn how to do this through a series of simulations and hands-on experiments in the research areas of human requirements, plant production, and resource recycling. The BioBLAST problems represent areas currently being studied at NASA to prepare for plant-based (bioregenerative) life support systems that may be used in a lunar or Mars habitat.
With the "Farming in Space" experiment, students have the opportunity to grow one of the NASA food crops used in BioBLAST. The students determine exactly how much harvestable food (edible bio-mass) and waste materials (inedible bio-mass) are produced by the two dwarf wheat crops. These data and additional plant biology knowledge gained during the course of the experiment can be incorporated into solutions to various simulation problems the students will face in BioBLAST.
NASA Life Science Outreach Challenge Project
Farming in Space Activity
The "Farming in Space" activity has been adopted as an activity to be tied to the NASA Life Sciences Outreach Challenge Project. The Challenge Project was developed to inform the public of NASA themes of human potential and exploration in anticipation of Senator Glenn’s return to space on STS-95 in October. The Project highlights issues concerning the human exploration of remote environments and of human aging. Farming in Space is used to emphasize the use of plants as a means of providing the essentials of life, both on earth and in controlled environments for exploration in the future.
