The 1999 Space Life Sciences Training Program was made up of twenty-four students from across the United States, and one student sponsored by the Canadian Space Agency, Life Science Division. The students selected one of three research emphasis groups centered on projects related to: Ecological Programs, Flight and Operational Medicine and Controlled Biological Systems research. The students spent about two-thirds of their time during the six-week program in the field or laboratory with most of the rest of the time spent in lectures and tours. The lecturers included NASA personnel (including astronauts), NASA contractor personnel, and representatives from universities and other space agencies.

Students had the opportunity to tour the Merritt Island Wildlife Refuge, Brevard Community College Planetarium, KSC Orbiter Processing Facility & Vehicle Assembly Building, KSC Visitor’s Center & Saturn V Facility, Sea World, Epcot Center, Astronaut Hall of Fame and US Space Camp. Each student participated in the service project that served the Merritt Island Wildlife Refuge, donating over 120 community service hours.

The students also utilized a local university library for literature searches supporting their life science research project and were given the option to earn five hours of college credit from Florida A & M University, who administers the program for NASA.

SLSTP is performed under NASA contract: NAS10-12180.
